When you come in for your regular dental cleaning and exam, Dr. Spencer Shelley may recommend that you have dental X-rays taken. This is because a visual exam cannot spot everything. There are areas in the mouth, like between the teeth, that the naked eye can’t see.

Dental X-rays are a valuable asset to our office because they allow our dentist to see between and inside the teeth. The tip of the tooth roots and the bone underneath the gums, which aren’t visible to the naked eye, can be easily inspected using dental X-rays. This diagnostic tool is often used as a part of routine dental exams. However, they can also be used to help diagnose a specific dental issue that you may be having.

Bitewing, panoramic, and periapical X-rays are the most common ones used in dental offices. Bitewing X-rays, which show the portions of the teeth that sits above the gums, are often used during routine exams. Periapical X-rays provide a great view of the entire tooth, from the crown to the tip of the root. Panoramic X-rays are taken from outside your mouth and create an image of the entire oral cavity.

Our dentist will determine how often you should have dental X-rays taken based on your oral health and other factors. We will often recommend that new patients have X-rays taken so that we can access their current dental health.
